Arch in the Park
By: Anna Luo
On October 19th, Student Leadership Club (SLC) members helped the Friends of Los Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve organization host a booth at the annual Arch in the Park event. Hosted by the San Diego County Archaeological Society (SDCAS), Arch in the Park is held every year on the third Saturday in October to celebrate both California Archaeology Month and International Archaeology Day. This year’s event at the historic Rancho Peñasquitos Adobe marked another chapter in a tradition that dates back decades, building on the legacy of the original “Park Day” that began in 1978.
This year, about 30 vendors and organizations set up booths at the event, providing a unique chance for students, families, and aspiring archaeologists to connect, learn, and explore career and volunteer opportunities. At the event, SLC volunteers were able to help set up and manage the booth by hanging photos, engaging with visitors, and organizing the spinning wheel game. Additionally, the volunteers were able to explore other booths and engage with neighboring organizations, gaining insight into the communities dedicated to preserving San Diego’s culture and ecology.
One of the highlights for the SLC members was learning basket weaving techniques at a nearby booth. They enjoyed crafting their own baskets from straw and learned about the skills and artistry valued by indigenous cultures in the region.
Overall, SLC volunteers left with a deeper appreciation for the history and archaeology of the region. This year’s celebration not only honored the legacy of Park Day but also underscored the importance of community involvement in preserving the natural and cultural heritage of San Diego for future generations.
