Restoration
6/30/24

On June 30th, 2024, volunteers finally returned to the Black Mountain restoration site! SLC members worked with the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve (FLPCP) organization and other volunteers to water and weed plants in the area.
Working in pairs, club members mainly focused on watering the plants for the first hour. With jugs of water that were placed around the site, volunteers made sure to give each plant a generous amount of water in order to facilitate growth and maintain its survival. Plants they watered include buckwheat, coyote gourd, and more!
Coyote gourd is a specific type of plant with extremely bitter seeds that animals such as coyotes enjoy eating. While the seeds are edible to humans as well, unless properly prepared, it will be practically inedible due to the bitter taste.
After watering all the plants, lead volunteer Jake lead SLC members, among others, on a tour around the site. He pointed out various plants, and also simultaneously lead the volunteers in uprooting the non native plants and weeds.
Overall, the volunteers enjoyed a relaxing and rewarding time at the Black Mountain Open Space Park, learning about their surroundings and helping out their community!
