Restoration
6/30/24

On July 14th, 2024, volunteers gathered at the Black Mountain restoration site with volunteers from the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve (FLPCP) organization for another restoration event! As it is currently the summer, which is outside of the normal growing season, the main goal is to simply keep the plants hydrated and the area weed-free.
Due to the limited water supply, volunteers prioritized watering plants with blue plant protectors around them first. These mark recently planted species, and they are therefore most susceptible to the hot weather and other animals. After the supply of water was exhausted, volunteers took a short break to regroup.
Given that the volunteers had finished early, Beth lead the SLC members around the site, showing them a variety of new plant species. These included the native lemonade berries, a new type of grindellia that had recently taken root in the area, and more. The volunteers even checked on the cacti patch that they had first worked on nearly a year ago at their first restoration event!
Eventually, the SLC group decided to take a short hike up Doug Hill to explore the other side of the restoration site.
After reaching the top, the club members took a couple minutes to enjoy the view and admire their progress before desending.
