Restoration

3/3/24

Whether rain or shine, Student Leadership Club members remain dedicated! On March 3rd, 2024, volunteers joined the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve (FLPCP) organization to continue working at the restoration site.

As the volunteers arrived, they encountered light drizzling on the walk over to the site. Despite this, the roads were not overly damp, meaning the FLPCP truck could still reach the site. Therefore, the head volunteers decided that the event could continue.

This week, the volunteers used a different planting technique and worked in pairs. After a demonstration, the volunteers split up and began working. For a majority of the afternoon, they mainly focused on one area by the side of the main pathway.

One person would create a slit in the dirt using a shovel before the other placed the plant in the dirt. Then, the shovel would be taken out and the excess dirt used to completely enclose the plant. Finally, volunteers watered the plant and placed a flag next to it. This allows future volunteers to see where watering is required and keep track of the plants.

A major challenge for working in drizzling rain was the mud. However, volunteers were able to use shovels and other methods to scrape their shoes clean. Furthermore, it made digging into the soil easier, and also provided the plants with moisture.

By the time the volunteers were finishing up, it had stopped raining and the sun was starting to come out again! Overall, this unique experience has built many core memories for the volunteers. After about 2 hours of planting, watering, weeding, and more, the volunteers headed back while discussing what they had accomplished.
