Restoration

2/18/24

On February 18th, 2024, students from schools across the county to learn about and help restore native San Diegan habitats. In collaboration with the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve (FLPCP) organization, Student Leadership Club members from the Asian American Parent Alliance of San Diego planted dozens of native plants, including meadow rue, scarlet monkey flower, buckwheat, white sage, red berry, and more.

Before starting, the members were given a planting demonstration by one of the senior volunteers, Jake. During the explanation, he introduced the technique of using the excess dirty to form a barrier around the plant and keep the water enclosed. He also explained the importance of using plant protectors and adding sufficient water to keep the plants unbothered and hydrated. While it is normal for plants to be consumed by other native animals, Cindy, another senior volunteer, explained that it is still essential to allow time for the plants to grow undisturbed.

After the demonstration, the volunteers split up and began working with the plants. Each took a water jug, plant protector, shovel, and gloves to each plant location. After working in the grassland area, the students spent the second half of the afternoon on a nearby hill.

While planting, the students also learned about the history of the restoration project itself. While this year is the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve's 40th anniversary, this project was started approximately 10 years ago. Overtime, a variety of outside factors have impacted their progress. For instance, a fountain in a nearby backyard has benefited the areas plant growth. However, an unresolved oil spillage issue in the area has also negatively impacted the area.

After about two hours of working, the volunteers ended the afternoon by recapping what they had accomplished while enjoying some snacks. In future events, the members will be able to return and check on what they had planted!
